History
Holland Quarters Cemetery, about five miles west of Carthage, is an African American burial ground on land deeded to former slaves by Spearman Holland after the Civil War. Established in December 1895, the site also held the Pine Grove Baptist Church, a school, and a lodge hall; its oldest known burial is an infant daughter of William and Betty Holland Rayson in 1895. More than 500 graves lie here, only about a fourth of them marked, including veterans from World War I through Vietnam. The Texas Historical Commission placed a marker at the cemetery in 1996.
