History

New Prospect Cemetery began in 1870 in a Panola County community once known as Scruggs, near Beckville. Homesteaders Robert Alexander Craig and his wife Martha Jane Freeland donated land for a church and graveyard, and the oldest documented burial is that of Elizabeth Scruggs, who died in 1870. Among its many marked and unmarked graves are pioneer settlers and veterans of wars from the Civil War through Korea. The Texas Historical Commission erected a marker here in 1996.
