History

Walnut Grove Cemetery lies behind Walnut Grove Church off U.S. Highway 59 about five miles northeast of Carthage. The surrounding community, probably settled just after the Civil War, had a school for Black students by 1897 and is counted among the historically African American communities of northeast Texas. Two churches and this cemetery were among the few features remaining by the mid-20th century as the settlement dispersed.
