Weatherford College traces its roots to 1869, when Weatherford's Phoenix Lodge of Masons obtained a charter for a Masonic Institute, though students did not arrive for another two or three years. The school was renamed Cleveland College in 1884 to honor President Grover Cleveland, and in 1889 the Central Texas Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, merged it with Granbury College, which the conference moved to town, and ran the combined school as Weatherford College. After operating only off and on in the early 1900s, it was reorganized in 1921 as a junior college, served as a branch of Southwestern University from 1944, and in 1949 passed to Parker County as the public Weatherford College of the Parker County Junior College District. The district bought 90 acres in southeastern Weatherford for a new campus in 1966, added a Mineral Wells center on part of the former Fort Wolters in 1975, and later spread extension centers across the surrounding counties. The bell that once hung in the original Old Main building now stands beneath a stone arch in a plaza on the modern campus.
