History

The Gregg Trail marks the route across the Texas Panhandle first traveled by Santa Fe trader Josiah Gregg, who passed this point on March 15, 1840. Gregg's book "Commerce of the Prairies" popularized the route, and in 1849 many California-bound gold seekers followed it, including an emigrant train escorted by troops under Captain R. B. Marcy. The Llano Estacado Chapter of the DAR, the Amarillo school trustees, and Palo Duro High School students erected the three-sided marker in 1959.
