History

This was the Clarksville home of Colonel Charles DeMorse (1816-1887), remembered as the 'Father of Texas Journalism' for founding The Northern Standard newspaper in 1842. DeMorse bought a two-room 1833 log cabin from Isaac Smathers and enlarged it over the following decades into a substantial house. A Recorded Texas Historic Landmark listed on the National Register, the home is cared for by the Red River County Historical Society.
