History

Robert Hamilton was one of five signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence from the Red River district, more than from any other area. A Scottish immigrant who reached North Carolina in 1807 and fought at the Battle of New Orleans, he came to Texas in 1834 and was probably the wealthiest of all the signers. In 1836 he became chief justice of Red River County. He is remembered on a marker in the Clarksville area.
