History

The West of the Pecos Museum was established in 1962 and has occupied the 1904 Orient Hotel and its adjoining 1896 "Number 11" Saloon since 1963. The saloon still holds its original bar and bullet holes from an 1896 shootout in which gunfighter Barney Riggs killed two men. The complex spans three floors and more than 50 rooms of exhibits, from pioneer and rodeo history to African American and Mexican American heritage.
