History

The Refugio County Museum, opened in 1983 in Heritage Park, is built in a log-cabin style evoking Texas pioneer days. Its exhibits trace the area from the 1790s Spanish mission of Nuestra Senora del Refugio and 19th-century Irish settlement through ranching and the 1929 oil boom, and include bronze sculptures by Frederic Remington and material on the 1836 Battle of Refugio.
