History

Oakwood Cemetery is one of the principal burial grounds of Refugio, a town that grew up around Mission Nuestra Senora del Refugio, the last of the Spanish missions in Texas, founded in 1793 and relocated to the present site in 1795. The villa of Refugio was formally established in 1831 after empresarios James Power and James Hewetson acquired the old mission and its surrounding settlement. Oakwood holds well over a thousand burials documenting the community's long history.
