History
Camp Hearne is the site of one of the largest World War II prisoner-of-war camps in Texas, a roughly 720-acre facility north of Hearne that opened in 1943 and eventually held about 4,800 Axis prisoners, most of them German soldiers of the Afrika Korps captured in North Africa. Hearne was chosen for its flat terrain, rail access, and local demand for farm labor, and the camp operated until it closed in January 1946. In 2010 the Friends of Camp Hearne opened a visitor center and exhibit at the historic site, where visitors can view camp ruins, a replica barracks, and hundreds of POW artifacts donated or excavated on-site.
