History

Norwood Cemetery has served as the city of Hearne's principal burial ground since the land was deeded to the town in 1870, the same year as its oldest documented grave, that of Mary Stroud Bolton. Local tradition holds that patients from a nearby Sisters of Charity hospital, along with unnamed Irish and Chinese laborers who built the region's railroads, were also interred here. Among its marked burials are Confederate veteran C.W. Gardner and members of the prominent Hearne and Lewis families. The Texas Historical Commission placed a state marker at the cemetery in 1997.
