History

Mount Tabor Cemetery preserves the burial ground of the historic Mount Tabor Cherokee community in northern Rusk County, near present-day Leverett's Chapel. Established after Cherokee Treaty Party families fled Indian Territory in the late 1830s, it is thought to hold about forty graves dating from roughly 1845 to 1866, including Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Creek people. No headstones survive, only ground depressions, among families named Starr, Bell, Thompson, Bean, and Mayfield.
