History

Cartwright Cemetery is the family burial ground of John Cartwright (1787-1841), a North Carolina native who reached Texas by 1819 and moved his family to the San Augustine area in 1825. A blacksmith and carpenter, he built a cotton gin and mill, served as a judge, and was a trustee of the University of San Augustine; he and his wife Polly (d. 1848) are buried here. The cemetery lies on private land in San Augustine County.
