History

Methodism at Shelbyville dates to about 1825, when tradition holds that circuit-riding preacher "Brother" James English led the town's first church service. An early church building on the site was destroyed by a storm and rebuilt in 1897; the congregation is recognized as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
