The stone-and-brick heart of every Texas county.
Designed in a mid-century Modern style and finished with buff-colored brick, granite, and dark marble. The six-story central block is flanked with two-story wings creating a symmetrical composition. Windows above the entrance and on the wings are vertically united with black marble spandrels. Others are punched windows. The first story is finished in reddish granite giving the appears of a base to the building.

The current Smith County Courthouse in Tyler was built in 1955 by the Dallas firm Thomas, Jameson and Merrill with E. Davis Wilcox Associates. Its limestone-clad form, a six-story central block flanked by two-story wings, is a simplified rendition of the setback courthouse style popular in the 1930s. It replaced a 1910 courthouse designed by Charles Henry Page Jr., the fifth in a line of Smith County courthouses dating to an 1846 log cabin.
