History
Flewellen-Thweatt Cemetery near Lindale is the burial ground of two prominent pioneer families of Smith County's plantation era. Thomas and Frances Maria Drake Flewellen came from Georgia and Arkansas in the 1850s, and Thomas bought 1,426 acres in 1859; the first burial was Frances Maria in 1861, laid to rest near the family home. Three of the Flewellen children married into the Thweatt family, and in 1919 daughter Mary Margaret Flewellen Hill deeded the land as a cemetery for Thomas Flewellen's descendants. An Official Texas Historical Marker was erected at the site in 2001.
