History

Harris Chapel Cemetery lies about four miles north of Lindale in northern Smith County, in the small Harris Chapel community that grew up around a church and school documented as early as 1903. In its early years the settlement supported one-teacher schools for both Black and White children, and by the mid-twentieth century a church, cemetery, and scattered farms marked the site. The local school consolidated into the Lindale Independent School District in 1952, but the cemetery endures.
