Whites Chapel

Whites Chapel Cemetery is one of the oldest surviving landmarks in present-day Southlake. Local tradition holds that burials began about 1851 with a child who died passing through in a wagon train, though the oldest documented grave is that of infant Amy A. Marr in 1872. Both the cemetery and its associated church were named for the Reverend Lewis M. White, a circuit-riding Methodist preacher who served the Grapevine circuit in the 1870s; among those interred is former state legislator Elihu Newton (1845-1925). The site received an Official Texas Historical Marker dedicated in October 2001 and is maintained by the Whites Chapel Cemetery Association.
