The King's University grew out of The School On The Way, a church-based teaching program that pastor Jack W. Hayford's congregation, The Church On The Way, ran in California's San Fernando Valley from the 1970s. Hayford built a college and seminary on that foundation, and its first classes met in Van Nuys in September 1997 under the name The King's College and Seminary. In 2009 Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas, teamed up with the school to start a Texas branch, and in 2010 the institution was renamed The King's University. With its board's approval, the university then shifted its headquarters from California to the Gateway Church campus in Southlake, a transition it finished in January 2014; today it offers undergraduate programs alongside The King's Seminary.
