History

Shep Cemetery lies in far southwestern Taylor County near the vanished community of Shep, which took its name from early rancher, storekeeper, and postmaster Andrew Martin Sheppard; the town's post office operated from 1903 to 1923. One of the county's pioneer cemeteries, it holds many older and once-unmarked graves that area residents have worked to identify. It preserves the memory of a community that a 1985 tornado all but destroyed.
