History

The Terry County Memorial Cemetery at Brownfield began in 1905 as the first public burial ground of the new county seat, when nineteen-year-old Jessie Hill was interred there. By 1907 the land belonged to M. V. Brownfield, though records do not say whether the cemetery was named for him or for the town. It declined through the World Wars and the Great Depression before a 1980 reorganization revived it, and it received a Texas historical marker in 1999; more than 2,000 graves fill the grounds.
