Angelo State started in 1928 as San Angelo Junior College, with 112 students. After World War II it moved to a new campus on the south side of town, where the first building went up in 1947. It became a four-year state school in 1963 and a university in 1969. This walk goes from the new Mayer Museum past the library and the Memorial Oak Grove, then to a chapel and bell tower built in the 2020s, and ends at the bronze sheep that stand for the Rams and Rambelles.

Angelo State began as San Angelo College, a two-year school that opened in 1928, two years after a city election authorized it, and that operated under the San Angelo school district in a downtown building on North Oakes Street. In 1945 Tom Green County voters set up a county junior college district with its own elected trustees, and in 1947 the college put up the first building on the land it occupies today. A 1963 law, championed in the Senate by Dorsey B. Hardeman, a onetime San Angelo mayor, converted the junior college into the four-year Angelo State College, with state regents taking control on September 1, 1965. The first bachelor's degrees were conferred in May 1967, and the school became Angelo State University in May 1969. A building boom in the late 1960s produced the Porter Henderson Library and the Cavness Science Building, and graduate study was authorized in 1970. After joining the Texas State University System in 1975, the university switched to the Texas Tech University System in 2007 following a campaign led by its alumni association, and in 2009 it launched its first doctorate, in physical therapy. Today the campus is organized around a tree-lined pedestrian mall more than a mile long, and the university is known for its live ram mascot and attractions such as the Mayer Museum and a planetarium.
