History

The Austin State Hospital Cemetery serves the institution founded in 1856 as the Texas State Lunatic Asylum, the first psychiatric hospital in the state. When burial space near the original grounds ran short, this eleven-acre plot on West 51st Street was opened, and roughly 2,900 people were laid to rest here, many in graves marked only with numbered concrete or metal tags. The Texas Historical Commission recognized the cemetery in 2002.
