History
DeWitt Clinton Baker (1832-1881), born in Portland, Maine, came to Austin around 1850 and worked as a druggist for twenty-five years. He helped establish the city's public schools, served as inspector of schools from 1872 to 1877, and was treasurer of the Austin Library Association. Baker also wrote 'A Brief History of Texas,' the first Texas history textbook used in the state's schools. His 1871 home was later acquired by a University of Texas sorority, and the marker was dedicated in 1971.
