History
The Dessau community north of Austin was founded in 1854 by German immigrant families and named for Dessau in Anhalt, Germany, where settler Martin Wieland had grown up. In 1877 two acres were set aside for a cemetery and schoolhouse beside the Evangelical Lutheran church built the previous year. German-language worship continued into the mid-1900s, and the cemetery holds more than 200 graves of the settlement's pioneer families.
