History

Lacy Cemetery is the burial ground of the historic African American community of Lacy, founded four miles north of Groveton by formerly enslaved people after the Civil War and named for settler Amos Lacy, Sr., who arrived after 1865. A church organized before 1900 anchored the settlement, and by the 1930s Lacy included that church, a school, houses, and this cemetery. Today the Lacy Cemetery and the New Hope Baptist Church are essentially all that remain of the once-thriving freedmen's community.
