History

The Rankin Museum in Rankin, the seat of Upton County, is housed in the historic Yates Hotel (about 1927), one of the region's first fireproof hotels. Rancher Ira Yates built it after striking oil on his ranch in 1926, and the three-story, 46-room building operated as a hotel until 1964 before reopening as a museum. The lobby still displays original wicker furniture, a phone booth, and a ceiling fan.
