History

Rankin Cemetery was established in 1915, shortly after civic leaders Ira Yates, J. H. Felps, Tom F. Hickox, and Dr. J. H. Johnson founded the town of Rankin, the oldest community and seat of Upton County. The first burial, in 1916, was Dr. Johnson's niece Mary Evelyn Johnson. Many interments date from the 1920s oil boom that transformed the area, and the grounds are said to include the unmarked graves of two bank robbers; a state historical marker was placed in 1985.
