History
The Judge Roy Bean Visitor Center in Langtry, a Texas Department of Transportation travel center operating since 1939, preserves the Jersey Lilly saloon where Roy Bean, the self-styled "Law West of the Pecos," dispensed whiskey and frontier justice as justice of the peace for nearly 20 years in the late 1800s. Bean named the saloon and his "Opera House" for English actress Lillie Langtry, whom he admired but never met; she visited Langtry months after his 1903 death. The center also includes his home, a desert cactus garden, and travel information.
