History

The Salt Palace in Grand Saline is the town's visitor center and museum and is said to be the only building in North America faced entirely with rock salt. Grand Saline sits atop one of the largest and purest salt domes in the United States, mined by Morton Salt since 1931. The first Salt Palace was built in 1936 for the Texas Centennial and patterned after the Alamo; erosion by rain forced repeated rebuilding, and the current structure dates to 1993. Inside, exhibits present salt-mining memorabilia and film of the mine 750 feet underground.
