History

The Morton Salt Company Building recalls Grand Saline's long history as the 'Salt Capital of Texas,' sitting atop one of the largest and purest salt domes in the world. Mining at the site began about 1890 under the Grand Saline Salt Company, whose holdings were acquired by Morton Salt in 1920, and Morton opened its underground mine near town in 1931. By the 1950s Van Zandt County was the leading salt producer in Texas.
