Designed in a Classical Moderne style with imposing block massing and relatively austere exterior. It is constructed of steel and reinforced concrete and is faced entirely in limestone. The five-story building possesses two wings on its east and west elevations; both are three stories atop the basement and one floor shorter than the main block. It features conservative Art Deco ornamentation, including minimal reliefs, vertical windows, and graceful angular lines.

The Van Zandt County Courthouse in Canton was built from 1936 to 1937 in the Art Deco style, designed by the firm Voelcker & Dixon and funded with special county funds and a grant from the federal Public Works Administration. It is the sixth courthouse to serve the county, following earlier structures at Jordan's Saline and Canton dating back to 1848, including a Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse of 1896 that was razed in 1925. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
