History

Memorial Square was laid out in 1824 when Martin de Leon founded Victoria, then part of Mexican Coahuila y Tejas, and it served as the town's early burial ground. Interments included soldiers of the Texas Revolution, victims of an 1846 cholera epidemic, troops passing through during the Mexican War, and Confederate dead whose headstones were later destroyed during the federal occupation. Burials gradually ceased, and since 1899 the ground has been set aside as Memorial Square, dedicated to monuments of Texas history; the State Historical Survey Committee marked it in 1968.
