Civic leaders in Victoria spent the late 1960s pushing for a university in the Coastal Bend, and in 1971 the state's higher-education coordinating board responded by creating an off-campus University of Houston Victoria Center. The center enrolled its first 100 students in the spring of 1973. In 1983 the Legislature granted it permanent degree-granting status as the University of Houston–Victoria, making it the fourth university in the UH System. For its first decades it was an upper-level school for juniors, seniors and graduate students, sharing a library, bookstore and fitness facilities with neighboring Victoria College. Jaguars athletics began in 2007, and after Governor Rick Perry signed enabling legislation in 2009, the first freshmen and sophomores arrived in fall 2010 along with the campus's first residence hall, Jaguar Hall. In 2025 lawmakers transferred the university to the Texas A&M University System, and on September 1, 2025, it became Texas A&M University–Victoria, keeping its red, black and gold colors and its Jaguars identity.
