History
The Museum of the Coastal Bend in Victoria interprets some 13,000 years of regional history, from the area's first inhabitants through French, Spanish, and Mexican colonial efforts. A highlight is its collection related to French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, whose Fort St. Louis (1685) was the first European settlement in Texas, established in present-day Victoria County. The museum displays seven of the eight bronze cannons recovered from the fort site and participates in the La Salle Odyssey, a network of museums telling the story of the expedition and the shipwreck of La Belle in Matagorda Bay.
