History
Austin Hall, the oldest building on the Sam Houston State University campus in Huntsville, was built in 1851-52 in the Greek Revival style as the main building of Austin College, a Presbyterian school. Sam Houston, a member of the college's first board of governors, helped dedicate it on June 24, 1851. After Austin College moved to Sherman, the building was deeded to the state in 1879 for the new Sam Houston Normal Institute, and it is regarded as the oldest continuously used state-owned higher-education building west of the Mississippi.
