The Sam Houston Memorial Museum occupies eighteen acres of Sam Houston's original farm, which he and his family owned from 1847 to 1858, and it opened in 1937 for the Texas Centennial. Its centerpiece is the dogtrot 'Woodland Home,' Houston's residence from 1847 to 1859, declared a National Historic Landmark in 1974. Owned and operated by Sam Houston State University, the ten-building complex also preserves Houston's law office and other structures.
