History
The Samuel Walker Houston Museum and Cultural Center honors educator Samuel Walker Houston, born free in 1864 to Joshua Houston, a formerly enslaved man of General Sam Houston, who founded a training school for African Americans near Huntsville in 1906. First opened in 1991, the museum reopened in 2001 in the former Huntsville Negro High School building, which the school district gift-deeded to the alumni association in 2013. Its grounds feature the 'Dreamers' sculpture wall depicting 69 faces across generations of African Americans.
