The rectangular two-story building with basement is defined by continuous deep porches on all facades. Embellishments include a colorful star pattern one the porch slab edge and restrained dark brown banding atop the square columns.

The present Walker County Courthouse in Huntsville, the county's fifth, was completed in September 1970 to a design by Joiner, Coburn and King. It replaced an 1889 courthouse by Houston architect Eugene T. Heiner that blended Victorian Gothic, Renaissance Revival, and Italianate details and was destroyed by fire on Christmas Eve 1968. The county's earlier courthouses dated back to the 1840s and 1850s on the Huntsville public square.
