History

Newport was a Trinity River port a few miles east of Riverside in Walker County, established about 1846 by German immigrant Joseph Werner. It briefly flourished before the Civil War with roughly 200 residents, a post office (1855-1872), a school, store, tannery and blacksmith shop, but it declined after the railroads arrived in the early 1870s. A Centennial marker was placed at Werner Cemetery to commemorate the town in 1936.
