History

Martha's Chapel Cemetery is the last remnant of the Robinson Settlement in southwestern Walker County, a Methodist stronghold where a campground, church, and school were established by 1839 on land given by William and Elizabeth Robinson. The site took its name in 1854 from Martha Palmer, wife of a church trustee, who was buried behind the church; the Texas Historical Commission marked the cemetery in 1990. Reached by Bowden Road, locally nicknamed Demon's Road, it is also the subject of well-known Texas ghost lore.
