History

Grant Colony Cemetery is the surviving heart of Grant's Colony, a freedmen's community founded in 1866 about five miles east of Huntsville by benefactor George Washington Grant, who set aside a large tract along Harmon Creek for formerly enslaved families and, in 1867, deeded land for two churches and a school. The colony became a notable center of African American education and politics during Reconstruction, but by the 1930s its buildings were gone, leaving the cemetery—with roughly 500 known burials—as one of its few remnants.
