History

The Goree Unit cemetery holds burials from the Texas prison system's Goree farm south of Huntsville, which opened in 1911 as the Goree State Farm for Women—the state's first prison dedicated to female inmates—after a 1909 investigation exposed poor conditions for women held elsewhere. The farm operated with a cannery, orchard, crop fields, and a prisoner cemetery, and it was converted to a men's unit in 1982.
