History

Barstow, the first seat of Ward County, was promoted in 1891 as a town on the Texas and Pacific Railway and became a center of early West Texas irrigation farming championed by developer George Eames Barstow. The Barstow Cemetery grew with the town and holds roughly 900 graves in two sections—an east section run by a nonprofit association and a west section operated by the City of Barstow. Among those buried there is George E. Barstow himself, who died in the town in 1924.
