History

The Ward County Courthouse in Monahans was built in 1940 by the Amarillo firm of Townes & Funk, a stripped-classical / Art Moderne composition in smooth cream limestone with vertically stacked windows and aluminum spandrel panels. It replaced an 1893 courthouse in Barstow after oil discoveries near Monahans shifted the county's population and moved the county seat. The building was enlarged on its north and south elevations in 1974 and renovated in 2012.
