History

The Chappell Hill Circulating Library was founded in 1893 by the Chappell Hill Circulating Library Association, formed after W.G. Foote Jr. donated the book collection of his late father, a Methodist minister and Soule University professor. The small Colonial Revival library building, roughly 20 by 24 feet, was constructed in 1912 by J.W. Heartfield. The library closed in 1929 but was later restored by the Chappell Hill Historical Society, which found the original collection intact, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
