History

The Texas Cotton Gin Museum in Burton preserves the Burton Farmers Gin, organized by local farmers in 1913 and opened in 1914 as what is now the oldest operating cotton gin in America. The gin is powered by a 1925 Bessemer oil engine, the largest of its vintage still running in the U.S., and last ginned commercially in 1974. Restored by the nonprofit Operation Restoration and named the state's official cotton gin museum in 2009, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
