History
The community that became Brenham grew from the settlement of Hickory Grove, which took its new name in 1843 to honor Dr. Richard Fox Brenham, an army surgeon and Mier Expedition member killed in Mexico that year. It became the seat of Washington County in 1844 after residents offered 100 acres for a townsite, and it was incorporated in 1858. A state marker records its founding.
