History
William Jones Elliott Heard (1801-1874), born in Tennessee, received a land certificate from Stephen F. Austin and settled in 1832 on land in present Wharton County that became known as Egypt Plantation for the region's rich soil. He commanded Company F in Sam Houston's army at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. In 1866 he moved to a plantation at Chappell Hill in Washington County, where he died and is buried in the Masonic Cemetery.
